American Red Cross Paid Internship Program

The American Red Cross provides paid internship opportunities during the summer for undergraduate and graduate college students. Internships provide individuals with valuable hands-on experience working with Red Cross volunteers and staff members on the local and national level. Paid internships last 10 weeks and consist of a 40-hour workweek.

Applications for summer internships open each November. Flexible schedules are offered to accommodate class schedules. The program does not reimburse for relocation or housing costs. During the initial phase of hiring, candidates will receive a phone interview with the department sponsor. Selected candidates will be invited for a second interview among a small pool of finalists.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) Internship Program

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF-USA) extends numerous Spring, Summer and Fall internship opportunities based in New York City. Access Campaign Commission, Access HIV and Tuberculosis Policy, Editorial, and Multimedia, and Medical and Operational Research are only a few of the internships offered each year.

Each internship has different specific application criteria and assigned duties. Potential candidates may apply for more than one term. Assignments will last for 3 to 4 months depending on the term and most often require a 20-hour work week commitment.

Applicants must be able to work in the United States without sponsorship and are responsible for their relocation costs and accommodations. Strong English skills are required in addition to excellent written and verbal communication skills. Internship assignments are highly competitive and those with substantial knowledge and experience in the area chosen will receive priority.

Care International helps to save lives, reach social justice, and to defeat poverty around the world, focusing its efforts on women and girls. Interns learn about global development and health, as well as about other topics of international importance. Additionally, professional development is available through CARE’s online university. The US office hires undergraduate and graduate students who want to support its mission. Interns are hired for fall, spring, and summer semesters. The Norwegian Refugee Council is a non-governmental, humanitarian organization. NRC advocates for the rights of displaced populations and offers assistance with the camp management, shelter, education, food security, legal assistance, and water, sanitation and hygiene sectors.

NRC offers internships in many of its locations such as; Washington DC and Oslo. As an intern you complete desk research, program management support tasks, editorial work, attend meetings and interact with staff members around the globe. The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) assists refugees and internally displaced persons across the globe; by providing emergency, fighting for their rights, and strengthening opportunities for a brighter future.

The Danish Refugee Council offers a wide range of internships that are geared to fit the needs of the different programs and administrative work during that season. All Hands and Hearts emerged in 2017 from two separate organizations who decided to join efforts and fight against disasters together. They are a very heavy volunteer-based organization that works through disasters and recovery in the US and abroad. With a mission to deliver a smart response to those reeling from disaster both domestically and internationally.

As an intern with All Hands and Hearts, you will be unpaid with accommodation paid for if placed in a post outside of the U.S. Internships typically are 3-6 months in length and focus around volunteer coordination, such as communicating with incoming volunteers, arranging schedules, coordinating volunteer engagement events and supporting the program director.

Medair is a humanitarian organization inspired by Christian faith to relieve human suffering in some of the world’s most remote and devastated places. Medair works in 11 different countries providing emergency support to people in need through critical programming.
