American Red Cross Paid Internship Program

The American Red Cross provides paid internship opportunities during the summer for undergraduate and graduate college students. Internships provide individuals with valuable hands-on experience working with Red Cross volunteers and staff members on the local and national level. Paid internships last 10 weeks and consist of a 40-hour workweek.

Applications for summer internships open each November. Flexible schedules are offered to accommodate class schedules. The program does not reimburse for relocation or housing costs. During the initial phase of hiring, candidates will receive a phone interview with the department sponsor. Selected candidates will be invited for a second interview among a small pool of finalists.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) Internship Program

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF-USA) extends numerous Spring, Summer and Fall internship opportunities based in New York City. Access Campaign Commission, Access HIV and Tuberculosis Policy, Editorial, and Multimedia, and Medical and Operational Research are only a few of the internships offered each year.

Each internship has different specific application criteria and assigned duties. Potential candidates may apply for more than one term. Assignments will last for 3 to 4 months depending on the term and most often require a 20-hour work week commitment.

Applicants must be able to work in the United States without sponsorship and are responsible for their relocation costs and accommodations. Strong English skills are required in addition to excellent written and verbal communication skills. Internship assignments are highly competitive and those with substantial knowledge and experience in the area chosen will receive priority.

CARE USA Internship Program

Care International helps to save lives, reach social justice, and to defeat poverty around the world, focusing its efforts on women and girls. Interns learn about global development and health, as well as about other topics of international importance. Additionally, professional development is available through CARE’s online university. The US office hires undergraduate and graduate students who want to support its mission. Interns are hired for fall, spring, and summer semesters. The vacancies for each term are posted on the CARE USA website. International vacancies are also posted for CARE’s other sites around the world.

Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) Internships

The Norwegian Refugee Council is a non-governmental, humanitarian organization. NRC advocates for the rights of displaced populations and offers assistance with the camp management, shelter, education, food security, legal assistance, and water, sanitation and hygiene sectors.

NRC offers internships in many of its locations such as; Washington DC and Oslo. As an intern you complete desk research, program management support tasks, editorial work, attend meetings and interact with staff members around the globe. Many of NRC’s internships are part-time (20-25 hours per week) and unpaid with transportation being reimbursed. The majority of their internships are open round the year.

Danish Refugee Council (DRC) Internships

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) assists refugees and internally displaced persons across the globe; by providing emergency, fighting for their rights, and strengthening opportunities for a brighter future.

The Danish Refugee Council offers a wide range of internships that are geared to fit the needs of the different programs and administrative work during that season. Many of the internships are offered at most of the regional offices and range in hours and benefits. For most of the internships, it is a requirement that you are still enrolled at a university or be within the first year of graduating.

Team Rubicon Internships

Team Rubicon is an international non-governmental organization founded in the U.S. Team Rubicon identifies itself as a veterans service organization that uses disaster response to help reintegrate veterans back into civilian life. Keeping this at the core of Team Rubicon, they rely heavily on the support of volunteers for deployment opportunities for disaster response.

The internships with Team Rubicon are reserved for individuals who are enrolled at a university for either undergraduate or graduate-level coursework. Many of the internship positions are focused on volunteer engagement or operations/logistic support. All internships are based out of Team Rubicon headquarters in Dallas TX or Los Angeles CA. Some of the internships are paid while others are unpaid it is important to check for this before applying.

All Hands and Hearts Internships 

All Hands and Hearts emerged in 2017 from two separate organizations who decided to join efforts and fight against disasters together. They are a very heavy volunteer-based organization that works through disasters and recovery in the US and abroad. With a mission to deliver a smart response to those reeling from disaster both domestically and internationally.

As an intern with All Hands and Hearts, you will be unpaid with accommodation paid for if placed in a post outside of the U.S. Internships typically are 3-6 months in length and focus around volunteer coordination, such as communicating with incoming volunteers, arranging schedules, coordinating volunteer engagement events and supporting the program director.

Medair Internships

Medair is a humanitarian organization inspired by Christian faith to relieve human suffering in some of the world’s most remote and devastated places. Medair works in 11 different countries providing emergency support to people in need through critical programming.

Internships normally start at the beginning of the year and are 6, 9, or 12 months long. All internship positions are based in one of the European offices such as Switzerland or Germany. The internships range depending on the availability and the needs of the organization at the time. Many of these are in program support components such as communications, IT, marketing, HR and others to keep programming running smoothly. All internships are paid and offer some additional benefits, such as holiday allocation.

Catholic Relief Services Internships

AN internship at Catholic Relief Services provides you with the professional experience knowledge and skills to help you enter the world of international non-governmental organizations. CRS offers you the opportunity to work with a diverse group of colleagues and gain exposure to the international relief and development world, including valuable contact and useful references. AN internship with CSR is an excellent way to develop your professional skills and explore the field of international development with a faith-based organization.

Internships are offered three times a year; January through June, June through August, and September through December. You must currently be enrolled at a university. Depending on the time and internship you apply for depends if the position is full time, part-time, paid and unpaid. All internships are based in Baltimore, Washington DC, California, Texas, Illinois, Georgia, and Pennsylvania.

FEMA Internships

FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is an agency of the U.S. government that response and coordinated efforts during a natural disaster. FEMA has a program called Pathways which is for interns, recent grads and fellowships.

The Pathways Internship Program offers paid opportunities for current individuals enrolled in high school through graduate school at a minimum of part-time.

ACTED’s mission is to save lives and support people in meeting their needs in hard to reach areas. ACTED develops and implements programs that target the most vulnerable amongst populations that have suffered from conflict, natural disaster, or socio-economic hardship. ACTED is one of a handful of organizations that allow interns in the field. This allows you to get the first-hand experience early on in your career through interacting with other professionals in the field.

Internships with ACTED are in diverse locations and focus areas such as finances, project development, human resources, logistics, and more. Depending on the internship you will receive a stipend, accommodation, food, and travel to and from the program site.
