Introduction to the Nonprofit Sector, Nonprofit Organizations, Nonprofit Leadership is a free online management and leadership course offered by the State University of New York in the United States. This five-week course provides an introduction to the nonprofit sector in North America; however, students can apply the knowledge gained to other global regions. Through the online video lectures and supplemental assignments, students will learn what the nonprofit sector is and why it exists. Students will also have a chance to explore the differences between leadership and management and to examine the role of the board of directors in nonprofit leadership. In addition, students will have an opportunity to create their own Board Effectiveness Readiness Assessment.

The Roles and Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards of Directors within the Governance Process is a free online strategic management course offered by the State University of New York in the United States. This five-week course is part of the material included in the class Governance of Nonprofit Organizations and can be taken after the university’s Introduction to the Nonprofit Sector, Nonprofit Organizations, Nonprofit Leadership for those who wish to learn more about the roles and responsibilities of the board specifically. The class includes three video modules: Board Authority and Role in Organizational Governance; The Board’s Role in Strategic Planning; and The Board’s Role in Performance Assessment. Students then complete a final assignment and participate in a peer review.
