5 International Development Conferences You Should Not Miss in 2019


While 2018 saw some spectacular advances in the international development field, more work can always be done. With innovation, sustainability, and creativity ever on the rise, 2019 is sure to be packed with excellent networking and educational opportunities via international conferences. Here are just a few that have already begun the call for speakers/proposals and planning processes.

  1. Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy– 19 March 2019

Just before the UN Human Rights Council’s main annual session, a summit on human rights and the democratic process will be held in Geneva, Switzerland. Each year, the Summit allow hundreds of activists, journalists, students, diplomats, and other honored guests to come together to shed light on urgent human rights situations necessitating global attention and intervention. Sponsored by a coalition of 25 human rights NGOs from the around the world, the Summit builds on previous momentum and hosts speakers who can testify about their personal struggles on an international stage. Together, participants are empowered to plan action strategies through networking and collaboration.

  1. Dubai International Humanitarian Aid and Development Conference and Exhibition– 12 – 14 March 2019

The Dubai International Humanitarian Aid and Development Conference (DIHAD) is an annual event now approaching its 16th edition. It was the first humanitarian aid and development event developed and hosted in the Middle East. Since its debut, it has continued to allow practitioners to come together to exchange ideas, practices, and values. Frameworks will be reviewed and top influencers give presentations and talks. The conference connects actors from across the spectrum, from large UN aid agencies and INGOs to local private sector establishments and governments. The event includes exhibitions, conferences, and workshops, allowing people across the sector to interact, foster partnerships, share knowledge, and seek funding opportunities. The theme listed for this year is, “People on the Move”.

  1. Aid and International Development Forum (AIDF) Africa Summit– 26-27 February 2019

2019 will mark the fourth annual AIDF Summit. It will return to Nairobi, Kenya again this year, uniting more than 300 international development and humanitarian leaders, decision makers, and other relevant actors in specific fields. The Africa Summit brings representatives together to present project updates, form partnerships, share innovations, explore policy changes, and detail best practices in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the region. Participants who attend the event will share space with development banks, government agencies, and donors, benefiting from the interactive sessions and networking opportunities. Keynote speakers, presentations, and an award ceremony are also on the program agenda.

  1. The 21st International Conference on Conflict Management and International Development– 14 – 15 January 2019

Hosted on the island of Bali in Indonesia, the ICCMID conference brings together scholars, researchers, educators, and academics from across several sectors and fields to share and exchange ideas. The research topics and methods are diverse, as this is truly an interdisciplinary event. Individuals are encouraged to submit presentation proposals focusing on challenges encountered and practical solutions. Lessons learned are also always valuable for the greater international community. The year in trends, concerns, and innovations will also be discussed in great detail by actors from across the development and conflict mediation/mitigation realm. The organizing bodies have teamed up with the Special Journal Issue on Conflict Management and International Development to select the papers deemed to have the highest international impact. While the first day of the conference is a physical program, the second (digital) day is available online for conference communications and proceedings.

  1. International Conference on Sustainable Development– 4 – 5 September 2019

The seventh International Conference on Sustainable Development will be hosted in Rome, Italy at the beginning of September 2019. The conference is renowned for enabling the presentation of papers published throughout the previous year, which facilitates the sharing of research findings, ideas, professional issues, and creative problem-solving. This event is also multidisciplinary in nature and invites scholars, teachers, students, and practitioners from any discipline to submit abstracts on any topic where environmental, economic, social, and cultural concerns and impacts intersect. For example, previous submissions have focused on: economic stability in emerging countries; microfinance; renewable energies; food and environmental legislation; water and soil conservation; sustainable urbanism; psychology, sociology, and education.  The theme for the upcoming year is, “Creating a unified foundation for Sustainable Development: research, practice, and education”. Papers, exhibits, and virtual presentations may be exhibited.
